The Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, were influential German academics and researchers.

They specialized in folklore, linguistics, and literary scholarship. Their work helped shape modern folkloristics, which is the scientific study of traditional stories. They also deeply studied the history of the German language. Through their research, they preserved oral traditions that might otherwise have been lost. Their scholarly methods established lasting standards for how researchers document cultural history.

The brothers followed a specific methodology to collect and record folk stories. They did not simply invent tales; they gathered them from people they knew. Much of their data came from educated, urban acquaintances. They would listen to stories and then carefully document them. Between 1812 and 1857, they expanded and revised their collections many times. They refined the language and the themes of these tales to improve them. This process turned oral traditions into a formal written record.

This collection grew significantly over several decades. The first edition in 1812 contained only 86 stories. By the end of their work, the collection included more than 200 stories. They also produced studies on Germanic and Scandinavian legends. Additionally, they wrote about medieval texts and Norse mythology. They even published works regarding Danish and Irish folk tales.

They were raised in Steinau in a large family of nine children. Their lives changed greatly when their father died in 1796. This death caused extreme poverty for the family. The brothers became exceptionally close because they had to rely on each other. They eventually studied at the University of Marburg. There, they were inspired by their professor, Friedrich von Savigny. He encouraged their interest in history and philology, the study of language in historical texts.

Despite their academic success, the brothers often faced financial hardship. While at Marburg, they were excluded from tuition aid due to their social status. Wilhelm once wrote that his family often ate only three portions of food once a day. They eventually found steady work as librarians in Kassel. This employment provided them with the time needed for intensive research. In 1830, they moved to the University of Göttingen. Jacob became a professor and head librarian there. However, they lost these posts in 1837 after protesting political changes. They were part of the "Göttingen Seven," a group of professors who refused to sign an oath of allegiance to the King of Hanover.

In Berlin, they focused on massive scholarly projects. In 1838, they began the *Deutsches Wörterbuch*, or German Dictionary. This was an ambitious historical dictionary intended to be definitive. It was such a vast undertaking that it remained uncompleted at the time of their deaths. Jacob also researched German legal traditions and the history of the language. Wilhelm focused on editing new editions of their folk tale collections.

The impact of the Brothers Grimm is seen in many modern contexts. They popularized famous tales like "Cinderella," "Snow White," and "Rapunzel."

These stories have been translated into many languages and adapted into films. Beyond entertainment, their work is examined in political, educational, and psychological fields. Their research helped revive interest in traditional folk stories during the 19th-century Romanticism movement. They viewed these stories as a pure form of national culture. Their legacy lives on through both popular culture and serious academic study.
