Rumpelstiltskin is a famous German fairy tale.

The Brothers Grimm collected this story in 1812. It begins with a miller who makes a boast. He tells a king that his daughter can spin straw into gold. The king locks the girl in a room filled with straw. He demands she spin it into gold by morning.

A little man, called an imp, appears to help her. He spins the straw for her in exchange for her jewelry. Later, the man asks for her firstborn child. The girl becomes a queen and has a baby. The imp returns to claim the child. The queen must guess his name within three days to keep her baby. She finds him in the woods. He sings his name in a song. Once she says "Rumpelstiltskin," he is very angry. In some old versions, he disappears forever. In others, he has a much more violent end.
