A Danish writer named Hans Christian Andersen wrote it. He first published the story in 1835.

The tale is about a very tiny girl. She emerges from a flower after a woman plants barley. One night, a toad carries her away. The toad wants her to marry her son. Thumbelina escapes with help from a fish and a butterfly.

Later, a beetle takes her. He leaves her when his friends do not like her. During a cold winter, a field mouse gives her shelter. Thumbelina helps an injured swallow get well. She sings and tells him stories. When spring comes, the swallow flies away.

A mole asks Thumbelina to marry him. She does not want to live underground. She flees to a far land with the swallow. There, she meets a flower-fairy prince. He is just her size. They marry, and she gets wings to fly.

Many people have made movies about her. A silent film came out in 1924. Warner Bros. made a film in 1994. Other stories use her name too.
