Thumbelina is a famous literary fairy tale written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen.

The story follows the adventures of a tiny girl navigating a vast and often difficult natural world. She encounters many different creatures, such as toads, beetles, and moles, who all have different intentions for her. Ultimately, the tale is a journey of survival and discovery. It concludes with Thumbelina finding a community where she truly belongs. This sense of belonging is why many readers find the story so meaningful.

The plot begins with a woman who wants a child. She follows advice to plant a piece of barley. After the barley sprouts, a tiny girl named Thumbelina emerges from the flower.

Her life becomes a series of escapes. First, a toad kidnaps her from her walnut-shell cradle to marry her to her son. Thumbelina escapes this fate with help from a butterfly and a fish. Later, a beetle captures her but eventually discards her after his friends reject her company. These encounters show how small and vulnerable she is in the wild.

As the seasons change, the story moves into a period of survival. When winter arrives, Thumbelina faces desperate circumstances. She eventually finds shelter with an old field mouse. While living there, she discovers an injured swallow.

She spends the winter visiting the bird at midnight. She helps him regain his strength by singing songs and telling him stories. This period of care highlights the connection between the characters. Once the swallow is healthy, he flies away but promises to return.

Conflict arises when the field mouse suggests that Thumbelina marry a mole. The mole is knowledgeable about ancient history and many other topics. However, he lives underground and never sees the sun or the sky. Thumbelina finds the idea of marrying him repulsive. She feels she has little choice until the swallow returns.

She chooses to flee to a far land with the bird. In a sunny field, she meets a tiny flower-fairy prince. They marry, and she receives a pair of wings. She is given a new name, Maia, to accompany her travels.

Hans Christian Andersen first published this tale in Copenhagen, Denmark. It appeared on 16 December 1835. The story was part of a second installment of a collection called Fairy Tales Told for Children. This specific collection also included the story "The Naughty Boy." Andersen's work has since been translated into many different languages. The tale has become a staple of literary fairy tales around the world.

Since its publication, many different artists have adapted the story into various media. In 1924, Herbert M. Dawley directed the earliest silent, black-and-white animated version. Lotte Reiniger released a cinematic adaptation using silhouette puppets in 1954. A Russian version was released by Soyuzmultfilm in 1964. This version was directed by Leonid Amalrik and featured satirical dialogue. Toei Animation also produced several versions between 1975 and 1978.

In 1994, Warner Bros. released a major animated film directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman, featuring the voice of Jodi Benson.

Modern adaptations continue to explore the themes of the original text. In 2009, Matt Mattel produced a modern retelling titled "Barbie Presents: Thumbelina." While the plot differs greatly from Andersen's work, it keeps the name alive. In 2021, a contemporary version premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. This short film was co-directed by Phoebe Wahl and Andrea Love. Even video games, such as the 2015 otome game Zettai Meikyuu Himitsu no Oyayubi-hime, use the character. These diverse versions show how a single story can connect different generations and cultures.
