It serves as the third largest city in the country, following Copenhagen and Aarhus. On the island of Funen, it is the largest city. The city is situated in the northeastern center of the island. By road, Odense sits north of Svendborg and south of Aarhus. It is also located southwest of the capital, Copenhagen.

The Odense River flows through the city, south of the main shopping area. To the north lies the Odense Fjord. As of January 2025, the city proper had 185,480 residents. The larger Odense Municipality had a population of 210,803. The wider metropolitan area includes all of Funen. This functional urban area had 504,066 people in July 2022.

The history of the area begins with very ancient human settlement. Archaeological evidence shows people lived here for over 4,000 years. The earliest communities lived on high ground. They stayed between the Odense River and Naesbyhoved Lake. The name Odense likely comes from "Óðins vé." This means "Odin's sanctuary." This refers to the area being a holy place for the god Odin.

The name first appeared in writing in 988. By 1070, the settlement had become a thriving city. In 1086, King Canute IV was murdered in St Alban's Priory. This event happened because of unhappy peasants and high taxes.

Canute IV is often called the last Viking king.

During the Middle Ages, Odense became a significant religious and commercial center. Many churches and monasteries were built during this time. St Canute's Church, which is now the cathedral, dates to the late 13th century. The city faced a major setback in 1247. Abel of Denmark burned the city during a royal conflict. The cathedral had to be completely rebuilt after this fire. Despite this, the city flourished as a place for merchants and craftsmen. In 1482, a printer named Johann Snell produced the first printed work in Scandinavia in Odense. This was a short prayer book called the Breviarium Ottoniense.

Significant modernization began in the 18th century to help the city grow. King Frederik IV ordered the rebuilding of Odense Palace.

Between 1796 and 1806, workers built a long canal. This canal was 8 kilometers long and 7.5 meters deep. It connected the Port of Odense to the Odense Fjord. This helped the city grow as a major port for trade. In 1851, the city gates were removed. This allowed the city to expand south of the river. The 1860s brought even more growth through the railway. A large terminal was built in 1865, making Odense a major rail junction. By 1900, the population reached 35,000 people.

Odense is internationally famous for its connection to Hans Christian Andersen. He was a famous writer of fairy tales. He was born in Odense in 1805 and grew up there.

This museum includes the earlier museum and Andersen's birthplace. It also features a memorial hall with frescos by Niels Larsen Stevns. The city continues to celebrate his legacy through events like the H.C. Andersen Marathon.

In modern times, Odense has transformed into a center for technology and education. It is now recognized as a leading "robotics city." This is because many companies that make cobots, or collaborative robots, are located there.
