"The Snow Queen" is a celebrated fairy tale written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen.

He first published the work on December 21, 1844, in a collection titled "New Fairy Tales. First Volume. Second Collection." Unlike many of Andersen's other short stories, this tale is written in a novel-styled narrative. It is divided into seven distinct chapters. It remains one of his longest and most highly acclaimed stories. Because of its depth, it is frequently reprinted in illustrated editions for children around the world.

The narrative begins with a magical mechanism involving a mirror created by a troll. This mirror is designed to distort reality by magnifying bad and ugly aspects of people and things. The troll's minions carry this mirror across the world to cause mischief. As they approach Heaven, the mirror trembles and shatters into billions of tiny fragments. Some pieces become windowpanes or spectacles, but others become stuck in human eyes and hearts. These splinters cause people to develop cold and bitter dispositions.

The central conflict follows two childhood friends named Gerda and Kai. They live in the garrets of a large city, where they play in window box gardens. Their bond is so strong they are as close as siblings. However, a splinter from the troll's mirror enters Kai's heart and eye during the summer. This causes a sudden change in his personality. He becomes cruel, aggressive, and loses his ability to see beauty. He eventually destroys their garden and stops caring for Gerda.

Kai's transformation leads to his abduction by the Snow Queen. She is the ruler of the "snow bees," a term used to describe snowflakes. She arrives in a sleigh and takes Kai away to her palace in the lands of permafrost, specifically Spitsbergen. Gerda begins a long quest to rescue him. Along her journey, she encounters several distinct characters. She meets a sorceress who tries to make her forget Kai through magic. She also meets a princess and a prince in a royal palace.

Gerda's journey involves many different types of helpers and obstacles. She is captured by robbers but is freed by a little robber girl who wants a playmate. A reindeer named Bae helps her travel toward the north. She also receives guidance from a Lapp woman and a Finn woman. The Finn woman explains that Gerda's power to save Kai lies in her innocent heart. This journey moves through various landscapes, from royal palaces to the frozen north.

The climax occurs in the Snow Queen's palace, where Kai sits on a frozen lake called the "Mirror of Reason." The Queen has tasked him with a difficult puzzle. He must use pieces of ice to form the word "eternity." If he succeeds, she will release him and give him a pair of skates. Gerda finds him and her warm tears melt the ice in his heart. This action dislodges the mirror splinter from his eye. The two children then dance joyously, and the falling ice pieces spell out the word "eternity."

Historical context suggests the Snow Queen may have a real-world connection. Andersen met a Swedish opera singer named Jenny Lind in 1840. He was very fond of her, but she did not return his romantic feelings. Some researchers believe the icy character of the Snow Queen was inspired by this experience.
