The mermaid is curious about the world above. She wants to find an eternal soul. She learns that humans have souls that live in Heaven. Mermaids turn into sea foam when they die. To become human, she visits a sea witch. The witch gives her legs. But the mermaid must give up her beautiful voice. Walking on land is very painful for her. It feels like walking on sharp knives.

The mermaid loves a prince. She tries to win his love to gain a soul. In the end, she makes a big sacrifice. She does not kill the prince to save herself. Instead, she turns into a spirit of the air. She can now do good deeds to earn a soul. This story has been made into many films and ballets. There is even a statue of her in Copenhagen, Denmark.
