In many stories, a princess is cursed by an evil fairy. The fairy says the girl will die if she pricks her finger. Some versions say she pricks her finger on a spindle. A spindle is a tool used to make thread.

Instead of dying, the princess falls into a deep sleep. A good fairy tries to help. She puts the whole castle to sleep for one hundred years. This way, the princess will not be alone when she wakes.

Later, a prince finds the hidden palace. He meets the princess and she wakes up. In some older stories, the tale is much longer. One version by Giambattista Basile has a princess named Talia. In that story, she has two children while she sleeps. The prince later finds her and they live happily.
