Theodor Fontane was a highly influential German novelist and poet. Many scholars consider him the most important realist author of the 19th century. Realism is a literary style that aims to depict life as it truly is. Fontane practiced this by focusing on factual accuracy in his fictional settings. He did not tell readers what his characters were thinking or feeling. Instead, he showed their motives through their specific words and actions. This method allowed the reader to observe the characters more objectively.

Fontane's writing style is often described as poetic realism. He was known for using tender irony and vivid conversations between characters. His stories often explored the complex social and political parts of the German Empire. He depicted different social classes meeting and sometimes clashing with one another. His characters ranged from the Prussian nobility to the lower-middle class. He also created many strongly drawn female characters. Notable examples include Effi Briest and Frau Jenny Treibel.

Before becoming a famous novelist, Fontane held several different jobs. He was born in Neuruppin in 1819 into a Huguenot family. At age sixteen, he became an apprentice to an apothecary. An apothecary is a person who prepares and sells medicines. He eventually worked in his father's shop in Letschin. In 1849, he left the apothecary profession to become a full-time journalist. He also worked for the Prussian intelligence agency, the Zentralstelle für Presseangelegenheiten. This agency aimed to influence the press toward German nationalism.

Fontane's career included significant time spent in London. He served as a correspondent for the agency while living in Britain. During this time, he married his wife, Emilie Rouanet-Kummer, in 1850. He wrote several travel books about his time in Britain. These included "Ein Sommer in London" and "Jenseit des Tweed." He was a lifelong anglophile, which means he loved English culture. He even began to imitate the style of Old English ballads.

His literary interests also included his home province, the March of Brandenburg. He spent much time walking through its rural landscapes and small towns. He published a five-volume series called "Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg." This work showed his fascination with the countryside near Berlin. He also wrote about the wars involving Prussia. He observed the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 as a journalist. During this conflict, he was taken prisoner at Vaucouleurs. He remained in French captivity for three months.

Fontane did not publish his most famous novels until late in life. He began working on them at the age of 58. His major works explored topics that were often considered taboo in polite society. These included marital infidelity, class differences, and the abandonment of children. He also wrote about suicide and the differences between urban and rural life. His novels, such as "Irrungen, Wirrungen" and "Effi Briest," sold well. They provided deep insights into the lives of both the nobility and middle-class citizens.

In his final years, Fontane faced many health problems. However, he continued to write until just a few hours before he died. He passed away in Berlin on 20 September 1898. He is buried in the French Protestant Church cemetery on Liesenstraße. His wife, Emilie, was buried next to him four years later. Their graves were damaged during World War II but were later restored.

Fontane's legacy connects to the broader history of German literature and society. He used his writing to offer social criticism of Prussian life. He adapted methods from contemporary French fiction to describe his own world. His work remains a vital study of the German Empire. Through his realistic lens, he captured a changing nation. He showed how individuals navigate the strict rules of their social class.
