He was a leading voice in a group called the Surrealists. These artists wanted to explore new and strange ideas. He also wrote novels and worked as an editor. For much of his life, he was a member of the French Communist Party. People remember him for his powerful words and his many different jobs in art and news. His life was full of big ideas and important changes.

Aragon worked in many different ways to share his ideas. He helped start a magazine called Littérature with his friends. He also worked for a newspaper called L'Humanité. In 1937, he helped launch an evening newspaper called Ce soir. He even ran a publishing house called EFR. This company helped bring books by many different writers to the world. He used these tools to share poetry, news, and stories with many people.

His life began in Paris, where he was born in 1897. He grew up with his mother and grandmother. For a long time, he did not know his real father was a man named Louis Andrieux. He only learned the truth when he was 19 years old. This happened just as he was leaving to serve in the First World War. These early years and his family secrets influenced the poems he wrote later in life. He eventually took the pen-name "Aragon" when he joined the Surrealists in 1924.

Aragon lived through very difficult times during World War II. He joined the Resistance to fight against German rule in France. He worked with his wife, Elsa Triolet, to help this cause. Because of his bravery, he won the Croix de Guerre, which is a military medal. During this time, his name was on a "black list" of forbidden authors. This meant his writing was not allowed to be sold or read by many. He even had his poems smuggled out of the country to be published safely.

As he got older, his political views began to change. He started to criticize the leaders of the Soviet Union. He used his magazine, Les Lettres françaises, to help writers who were not allowed to speak freely. He supported students in 1968 and helped share books by famous thinkers like Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Even though he had many changes, he remained a famous figure in France. Many singers, like Léo Ferré, set his poems to music.

He died in 1982 and is buried next to his wife.
