He is most famous for his 1926 novel, Don Segundo Sombra. This book focuses on the lives of gauchos, who are rural workers in Argentina. Güiraldes is considered one of the most significant writers of his era. His work often blended the traditions of the Argentine countryside with modern literary styles. He played a major role in the development of Argentine literature during the early 20th century.

His life was shaped by a unique mix of cultures and environments. Born in Buenos Aires in 1886, he was the son of a wealthy landowning family. His father, Manuel Güiraldes, served as an intendente, which is a governmentally appointed mayor.

Because his family moved to Europe when he was one, French became his first language. By age six, he was already multilingual, speaking Spanish, French, and German. This European upbringing deeply influenced his literary tastes and his specific writing style.

Güiraldes divided his time between the city and the family ranch, La Porteña. Located in San Antonio de Areco, the ranch allowed him to observe gaucho culture firsthand. It was here that he met Segundo Ramírez, a man who inspired the title character of his most famous novel. Although he suffered from asthma, he often projected an image of great physical vigor. He studied architecture and law at various institutes, but he never practiced these professions. Instead, he eventually committed himself fully to the craft of writing.

His journey to becoming a successful author included many setbacks. In 1915, he published Cuentos de muerte y de sangre, which means "Stories of death and of blood." When these stories failed to find a large audience, he grew discouraged. He gathered his unsold copies and threw them into a well.

Fortunately, his wife, Adelina del Carril, managed to rescue some of the books. These water-damaged copies are now considered very precious by book collectors.

As his career progressed, Güiraldes became a leader in the literary community. He traveled extensively, visiting places like Japan, China, Russia, and India. In 1924, he co-founded the magazine Proa alongside other writers like Jorge Luis Borges. He also helped found the Frente Único to oppose pompierismo. Pompierismo is the use of dry or overly formal academic language in writing. Through these efforts, he supported the avant-garde, which refers to new and experimental movements in art.

In his later years, Güiraldes experienced a significant spiritual shift. He began studying theosophy and Eastern philosophy to find internal peace. This interest in spirituality, including Hinduism, became a major theme in his late poetry. He finished his masterpiece, Don Segundo Sombra, in March 1926. This period marked his transition from a struggling writer to a respected figure in the literary world. His work continued to be published even after his death.

Tragically, Güiraldes's life ended shortly after his greatest success. In 1927, while traveling to France, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease. This is a type of cancer that affects the immune system. He died in Paris at the home of his friend, the painter Alfredo González Garaño.
