Augusto dos Anjos was a very important poet from Brazil.

He is remembered for his unique style of writing. Many people see him as a leader for a new style of art. This style is called Modernism in Brazil. His work often looks at serious topics like sickness and death. He used many scientific and medical words in his poems. This made his writing feel very different from other poets.

Augusto had a very active way of creating his poems. He did not always sit quietly at a desk. His friend Órris Soares said he often walked around while thinking. He would move his hands and say his verses out loud. While living in Rio de Janeiro, he had other habits too. He sometimes sat in a yard and screamed his poems. This was his way of making the words come to life.

Augusto was born in 1884 at a place called Pau d'Arco. This place was in the city of Cruz do Espírito Santo. It is in the Brazilian state of Paraíba. He learned at home with his father first. Later, he went to a school called Lyceu Paraibano. He became a teacher at that school in 1908. He also studied law at the Faculdade de Direito do Recife.

He published one book during his life named Eu. It was released in 1912. Not everyone liked the book when it first came out. In 1919, his friend Órris Soares helped him again. He published a new book called Eu e Outras Poesias. This new version had poems that were not printed before. These new poems helped people see his talent more clearly.

Augusto's life connects to many different parts of Brazil. He lived in Paraíba, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais. He worked as a magistrate and a headmaster. He died on November 12, 1914, from pneumonia. A tamarind tree still grows where his childhood home once was. This tree is a living link to his early years. His work remains a big part of Brazilian history.
