Augusto dos Anjos was a famous poet from Brazil. He was born in 1884. He lived in a place called Pau d'Arco. He began writing poems when he was only seven years old. Augusto also worked as a teacher and a law graduate.

Augusto had a very unique way of making his art. He did not always sit still to write. He often walked around and said his verses out loud. Sometimes he even sat in a yard and screamed his poems. His friend said he would move his hands while thinking.

His writing was very different from others. He used many words about science and medicine. His poems often focused on sickness and death. He wrote one book during his life called Eu. A friend later helped print more of his work. This new book was called Eu e Outras Poesias. Today, many people study his poems. Some call him a Pre-Modernist writer.

A tamarind tree is a special part of his story. This tree was at his home when he was young. The tree still grows there today. Augusto died in 1914 from pneumonia.
