He was a leader in a style called Symbolism. This style uses words to suggest ideas and feelings.

Mallarmé taught English for a living. He did not have much money. He held meetings at his home in Paris. Smart people came to talk about art and books. They met on Tuesdays. People called this group the Mardistes.

His poems are very special. The sound of the words is as important as their meaning. In French, his words can have more than one meaning. This makes his work hard to translate into English. He also used the white space on the page in new ways. His poem "Un coup de dés" uses spaces to change how we read.

Many artists were inspired by him. The composer Claude Debussy wrote music based on his poems. His work helped start new art styles in the 1900s. These included Cubism and Surrealism. Even today, people still study his unique way of writing.
