Symbolism was an art movement from France and Belgium. It began in the late 1800s. Most Symbolists were poets. They also made paintings and music.

These artists did not want to show real life as it looks. They did not like styles called naturalism or realism. Those styles tried to show every small, plain detail. Instead, Symbolists loved dreams and spirit. They used symbols to show deep truths. A symbol is a sign that stands for an idea.

They used many clever ways to make art. One way was called synesthesia. This is when one sense meets another. A poet might say a smell is like a song. Or they might say a color is like a sound. They wanted to suggest a feeling rather than name an object. This made their work feel like a mystery.

Some writers were called poètes maudits. This means "accursed poets." These artists often felt alone or different from others. They believed beauty was a very important and sacred thing. They used their art to reach for higher meanings.
