Decadent movement

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Decadent movement was a group of artists and writers. They lived in the late 1800s. Most of them lived in Europe. These creators did not want to copy the natural world. Instead, they loved fantasy and things that were made by hand. They thought human dreams were better than real life.

Many people in this group wanted to shock others. They used fancy words and strange ideas. They often liked things that were dark or even scary. The artist Félicien Rops drew many images for the writer Charles Baudelaire. Rops made art that was meant to be shocking.

Some writers, like Joris-Karl Huysmans, wrote about these ideas in books. His stories helped shape how people saw art. People in the movement might use art to escape boredom. They wanted to find new ways to feel deep things.

Anatole Baju started a magazine called Le Décadent. This helped organize the group. They used their art to break old rules. They believed this freedom could make people better. Eventually, this movement changed into a new style called Symbolism.
