Decadent movement

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Decadent movement was a unique way of making art and writing. It grew in Western Europe during the late 1800s. These creators chose to focus on fantasy instead of the natural world. They believed that human imagination was more important than logic. Many artists and writers wanted to celebrate beauty through excess and artificiality. They often preferred things that were man-made over things found in nature.

To create Decadent art, creators used specific methods to shock or interest people. Writers often used very fancy and extravagant language. They did not always follow the normal rules of literature. Some artists, like Félicien Rops, drew dark and fantastical images. Rops liked to use supernatural themes to show strange ideas. He often drew scenes that were meant to be quite shocking. These creators used their skills to explore deep and sometimes twisted ideas.

This movement has roots that go back to the 18th century. A philosopher named Montesquieu once wrote about the decline of the Roman Empire. He thought a loss of cultural standards caused this change. Later, a scholar named Désard compared certain French writers to that Roman era. In 1857, Charles Baudelaire used the term proudly in his book, Les Fleurs du mal. He saw the Roman decline as a model for modern poets. This helped turn a word about decline into a proud artistic label.

Many important names helped define this era through books and magazines. In 1884, Joris-Karl Huysmans wrote a famous novel called À rebours. This book helped people understand the Decadent way of seeing art. In 1886, Anatole Baju started a magazine named Le Décadent. This magazine helped organize the group of writers and artists. Other writers like Paul Verlaine and Stéphane Mallarmé were also part of this world. Even though they shared ideas, some artists eventually moved toward a style called Symbolism.

You can see how Decadence connects to other famous art styles. It acted as a bridge between Romanticism and Modernism. While Symbolists used nature to reach higher ideas, Decadents often preferred artifice. They believed human genius could create things better than nature ever could. Some critics even called this style a "new and beautiful disease." It was a time of great change and intense curiosity. This movement helped change how people thought about the purpose of art.
