Art Nouveau

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Art Nouveau is a beautiful and international style of art. It includes architecture, furniture, and many decorative arts. This style was very popular between 1890 and 1910. People often call this time the Belle Époque. Artists wanted to break old rules from the 19th century. They wanted to mix fine arts, like painting, with applied arts, like making jewelry. This helped make everyday objects feel special and artistic.

Nature provides the main ideas for this style. You can see sinuous curves from plants and flowers in the designs. Many artists used whiplash lines to show movement. These lines are curvy and look like they are moving. Artists also used modern materials like iron, glass, and ceramics. They even used concrete to create unusual shapes. These materials helped them build much larger and more open spaces.

The movement had many different roots and influences. In Britain, it grew from the Arts and Crafts movement. A man named William Morris was a big influence there. The style also loved Japanese art, which is called Japonism. Artists studied Japanese woodblock prints for inspiration. In France, thinkers like Eugène Viollet-le-Duc helped shape these ideas. He believed that nature's logic should be the model for buildings.

Brussels was one of the first places for these new homes. In the 1890s, Paul Hankar and Henry van de Velde designed important buildings. Victor Horta was a very famous architect in this group. He finished the Hôtel Tassel in 1893. This building is a major landmark for the style. Later, Hector Guimard brought the style to Paris. He used it to design the famous entrances for the Paris Métro.

Art Nouveau spread quickly to many different countries. It had many names depending on where you lived. In Germany, people called it Jugendstil. In Italy, it was known as the Liberty style. In Austria, artists called it the Secession style. It reached cities like Glasgow, Barcelona, and Munich. By 1914, the style began to fade away. New styles like Art Deco and modernism soon took its place.
