arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Art Nouveau is a famous style of art. It was popular from 1890 to 1910. This style looks like nature. Artists used curvy lines from plants and flowers. They also used lines that look like a whip. This is called a whiplash line.

Artists used new materials to make their work. They used iron, glass, and ceramics. They even used concrete. This helped them make large, open spaces. They wanted to mix all kinds of art together. They made furniture, jewelry, and glass art. They also made posters for famous people.

Many different places loved this style. It spread from Belgium to France and Britain. It also went to cities like Glasgow and Barcelona. In Germany, people called it Jugendstil. In Italy, they called it Liberty style.

In Brussels, Victor Horta built the Hôtel Tassel. This was a very important building for the style. Later, Hector Guimard used these ideas for Paris subway entrances. Art Nouveau was a big change for the world of art.
