These artists often create works that look or sound very different. Their ideas might even upset the people in charge of art. This kind of art is called experimental. It often pushes the boundaries of what people think is normal. Artists use these new styles to share fresh ideas. They want to change how we see the world.

Many avant-garde artists work to change society. They use their art to talk about politics and social issues. Some believe artists have a duty to help people. Henri de Saint-Simon wrote about this in 1824. He said art is a fast way to make changes. This can happen through many different types of art. It might be seen in a painting or a book. Even a short film can be a tool for change.

The word has a history in the military. In French, avant-garde means the "advanced guard." These are the scouts who go ahead of an army. They check the land before the main group arrives. In the 19th century, French politicians used the term too. They used it for people who wanted radical changes. By the mid-1800s, it began to describe art. It meant art that used new styles to seek change.

There are many famous examples of this movement. Dada was a movement from 1915 to the 1920s. The Situationist International worked from 1957 to 1972. In music, many composers broke old rules. Arnold Schoenberg and Igor Stravinsky are names you might know. Other musicians include John Cage and Philip Glass. These people made music that departed from tradition. They created sounds that were very new for their time.

Sometimes, the art world and business world clash. Some thinkers say big companies turn art into products. They call this the "culture industry." This can make art feel less special or unique. Writers like Walter Benjamin and Theodor Adorno studied this. They looked at how mass media affects art. Some people say we now live in a "postmodern" time. This means the old ways of making art have changed.
