Romanticism was a big movement in art and thought. It began in Europe near the end of the 1700s. Most people say it peaked between 1800 and 1850.

This movement was a response to new changes. The Industrial Revolution was changing how people lived. Many people moved to big, crowded cities. Romantics did not like this. They felt cities were bad for the soul. Instead, they loved the wild beauty of nature. They felt a deep connection to the natural world.

Romantic artists also valued big feelings. They believed that passion and intuition were very important. They wanted art to make people feel strong emotions. This could include wonder or even terror. They also loved the past. Many Romantics looked back at the Middle Ages. They saw that time as a noble era of heroes.

Each artist wanted to be unique. They used their own imagination to make new things. They did not want to just copy old styles. This idea of being original changed art forever.
