He wrote many books for children. Most of these stories take place on a farm. We call this place Sítio do Picapau Amarelo.

In his books, many characters come to life. There is a rag doll named Emília. There is also a puppet made of corn called Visconde de Sabugosa. These characters go on many big adventures. Some stories use magic. Other stories use science. His books help children learn many things. They teach about math, stars, and history.

Lobato was also a busy businessman. He helped start a big publishing house. He also worked as a journalist and an art critic. He even fought for Brazil to control its own oil.

Today, some people look at his work in a new way. They say some of his writing was not kind to Black people. They believe his ideas were unfair. Even with these hard truths, his books remain very important. They were even made into popular TV shows for many years.
