Vallejo's writing often used very new and bold styles. In his book *Trilce*, he used radical techniques. He invented new words and stretched how sentences work. This style is sometimes called surrealist. This helped put Latin America at the center of new art movements. He also wrote a book of poems called *España, aparta de mí este cáliz*. In that book, he used symbols to talk about the Spanish Civil War. He wanted to show the struggle between good and evil forces.

His life began in a remote village called Santiago de Chuco. This village is located in the Peruvian Andes. He was the youngest of eleven children. His grandfathers were Spanish priests. His grandmothers were indigenous Peruvians. As a young man, he worked at a sugar plantation called Roma Hacienda. There, he saw how hard the workers lived. This experience changed his ideas about politics and art. He later studied at the National University of San Marcos.

Vallejo faced many hard times in his life. He was once wrongly accused of a crime. He spent 112 days in a jail in Trujillo. This happened between November 1920 and February 1921. He also lost his job as a teacher. In 1923, he moved to Europe to escape more trouble. He lived in Paris, France, for many years. Life in Paris was often very poor for him. He even shared this poverty with the artist Pablo Picasso.
