Chairil Anwar was a very important Indonesian poet. He belonged to a famous group of writers called the 1945 Generation. Anwar was known for his intense and radical way of living. His poems often explored big ideas like individualism and existentialism. Many people found his work hard to define. This is because his poems changed based on his mood. Some poems felt exciting and full of life. Other poems felt sad or focused on death.

Anwar had a very unique way of writing. He did not usually follow old, traditional rules. Most of his poems used irregular patterns instead. He mixed short lines with long, linked lines. Only three of his poems followed a traditional four-line pattern. These were "Kepada Peminta-Peminta," "?," and "Cemara Menderai Sampai Jauh." He used everyday language to reach his readers. He also used prefixes and suffixes in new ways. This helped the Indonesian language become more dynamic.

Writing was not always easy for him. During the Japanese occupation, some of his poems were censored. In 1943, the magazine Pandji Pustaka rejected many of his poems. They thought his work was too individualistic. However, some poems like "Diponegoro" were allowed to pass. Anwar wrote about 96 works in his lifetime. This included 70 individual poems. He only considered 13 of them to be truly good. His most famous poem is titled "Aku."
