The Hoorn Islands are a unique group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean.

They form one part of the French overseas collectivity known as Wallis and Futuna. This group consists of two volcanic islands named Futuna and Alofi. They are separated from each other by a wide ocean channel. The islands sit northeast of Fiji and northwest of Tonga. They are also located west of Samoa.

Together, these islands cover an aggregate area of 120 square kilometers. They represent a small but significant part of the Pacific landscape.

Geographically, the Hoorn Islands are characterized by high altitudes and volcanic origins. Futuna is the larger island, covering 85 square kilometers. Alofi is much smaller, with an area of 35 square kilometers. Unlike many tropical islands, these do not have lagoons. Instead, they are high islands with a maximum height at Mont Puke. The islands are surrounded by coral reefs of varying widths. These reefs create a barrier around the land. There is only one major break in this reef system. This break is located at Leava, which is the main town.

The environment on the islands is shaped by a specific tropical climate. The weather is typified by high temperatures and high humidity. Heavy rainfall is a common feature of the region. This constant moisture supports a thick forest cover across the islands. Because of this environment, the islands possess a rich biodiversity. This means many different types of plants and animals live there. The lush greenery and the surrounding reefs define the physical experience of the archipelago.

Human history on the islands stretches back thousands of years. The first settlers arrived as early as the 8th century BCE. In the early 16th century CE, Tongans tried to settle Futuna. However, they were repelled and did not establish a permanent home. Later, Samoans settled the islands during the 17th century. In 1616, Dutch explorers Willem Schouten and Jacob Le Maire arrived. They were the first Europeans to visit the archipelago. They named the islands after the Dutch city of Hoorn. This was the city where their expedition had started.

European influence changed the islands through religion and politics. French Catholic missionaries arrived in 1837 and became the first permanent European settlers. By 1846, the local population had converted to Catholicism. Political ties to France began in 1842. This happened after King Lavelua asked for a French protectorate. For many years, the islands were part of a protectorate administered from New Caledonia. This arrangement lasted until 1961. Later, they became part of the French overseas territory of Wallis and Futuna. In 2003, this status changed to a French overseas collectivity.

The population of the islands is quite small and unevenly distributed. In 2018, the population of Futuna was 3,225 people. In contrast, Alofi had only a single resident at that time. The total population for the islands was 3,226 in 2018. All residents are French citizens. This means they are entitled to vote in French elections. The President of France serves as the Head of State. A prefect is sent to represent the President and holds executive power.

Governance in the Hoorn Islands is a blend of modern and traditional systems. A Territorial Assembly manages most social and economic matters. Members of this assembly are democratically elected for five-year terms. Alongside this, the islands maintain traditional Polynesian governance structures. There are two municipal councils named Alo and Sigave. These councils are headed by Aliki saus, who hold authority over customary issues. They are assisted by five ministers and a police chief. This system allows the islands to follow French law while respecting local traditions.
