These islands are known as atolls. An atoll is a ring of land in the ocean. The Hall Islands include two large atolls. Some people also include a third, smaller atoll in the group. They are a unique part of the sea.

These atolls sit on top of a seamount. A seamount is a mountain under the sea. This mountain has two lobes, which look like two rounded parts. The two large atolls are the parts of the mountain that stick out of the water. One atoll is named Nomwin. It sits in the west. The other is named Murilo. It sits in the east. They are about 9 km apart.

Many people call these islands home. Both Murilo and Nomwin have many residents. Each atoll has more than 1,000 people living there.

They are located about 100 km north of Chuuk Lagoon. There is also a place called East Fayu. It is a small atoll to the west. It is more than 30 km away from Nomwin. No one lives on East Fayu.

There is a lot of small land in this area. The three atolls have more than 50 islets. An islet is a very small island. These are also called motus.

All of these small islands together make up the dry land. The total dry surface is about 3.5 km2. This land is spread out over the many motus. It is a small amount of land for such a large area of sea.
