They sit in the state of Chuuk. This area is part of the Federated States of Micronesia. You can find them southeast of the Chuuk Lagoon. These islands are also known as the Mortlock Islands. They are an important part of the ocean region. Many different islands make up this group.

There are many islands to see in this group. Satawan is the largest atoll and it is in the south. Etal sits to the north of the other islands. Lukunor is located to the northeast. Both Etal and Lukunor are much smaller than Satawan. Some islands stay close together in a cluster. These are Losap, Nama, and Namoluk. People call this group the Upper Mortlock Islands or the Eastern Islands.

Other islands in the group have their own names. These include Ta, Oneop, Moch, Picemwar, and Kuttu. The islands are spread out across the sea. Some are near the larger atolls. Others sit more on their own.

It is a place with many different landforms. Each island is part of the larger Nomoi group. You can see many small pieces of land from above.

People may have lived here for a long time. Some think they arrived 800 or 900 years ago. They moved east from the Chuuk Lagoon. Spanish explorers saw the islands in 1528. Later, Captain James Mortlock saw two sets of islands in 1795. He was sailing from Port Jackson to Whampoa. This is why the islands have two names.

Much history was lost to war and natural disasters. We learn about the past from old artifacts and writings.

The people here keep many traditions. The Mortlockese language is used on the islands. It is similar to Satawalese and Puluwatese. It is also very close to the Chuukese language. However, the way people speak it is distinct. This makes the culture feel very special. The islands remain more traditional than the islands in the inner lagoon.
