It is one of four states in the Federated States of Micronesia. To the west lies Yap State. To the east are Pohnpei and Kosrae. Most people in the state live in the Chuuk Lagoon. This area is a large archipelago with high mountains. These islands sit inside a ring of small islets on a barrier reef.

The geography of the state is divided into different areas. The lagoon has two main parts called Faichuuk and Namoneas. There are also many outer islands that have fewer people. The Mortlock Islands are to the southeast. The Hall Islands are to the north. In the west, you will find the Pattiw Region. This area is home to master navigators. They use ocean-going outrigger canoes to travel. They even have special schools to teach these skills.

History shows that people have lived here for a very long time. Austronesian settlers first arrived on the islands. Some evidence shows people lived on Feefen and Wééné in the first or second century BCE. Later, the Chuukese culture formed around the 14th century. Many different nations have ruled the islands over the years. The Spanish saw the islands in 1528. Later, Germany and Japan also controlled the territory. After World War II, the United States helped manage the islands.
