History shows that people have lived here for a very long time. Austronesian settlers first arrived on the islands. Some evidence shows people lived on Feefen and Wééné in the first or second century BCE. Later, the Chuukese culture formed around the 14th century. Many different nations have ruled the islands over the years. The Spanish saw the islands in 1528. Later, Germany and Japan also controlled the territory. After World War II, the United States helped manage the islands.
Today, Chuuk is the most crowded state in its country. In 2010, there were 48,654 people living there. Weno is the state capital and the largest city. Most people speak the Chuukese language. Most people also follow the Christian religion. You can see many churches, like the Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral.

Chuuk State is a vital part of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). It is one of the four states that make up this democratic federation.

The geography of the state is divided into distinct regions. The Chuuk Lagoon has two major divisions. These are Faichuuk in the west and Namoneas in the east. There are also several sparsely populated outer island groups. These include the Mortlock Islands to the southeast. The Hall Islands, or Pafeng, sit to the north. The Namonuito Atoll is located to the northwest. The Pattiw Region lies to the west. This region includes the islands of Pollap, Tamatam, Poluwat, and Houk.
Human history in Chuuk began with Austronesian settlers. These people likely came from the Lapita culture of Island Melanesia. Archaeological evidence shows settlements on Feefen and Wééné Islands. These settlements date back to the first or second century BCE. By the 14th century CE, widespread settlements appeared. This period saw the formation of the Chuukese culture. European contact began with Spanish navigator Alvaro de Saavedra in 1528. The Spanish Empire later claimed the islands as part of the Caroline Islands. However, Spanish control was often only nominal. Traditional life continued despite their presence.
Control of the islands changed many times through the 19th and 20th centuries. Germany purchased the Caroline Islands from Spain in 1899. This happened after Spain lost the Philippines in the Spanish–American War. Germany included the territory in German New Guinea. During World War I, the Japanese navy seized German possessions in the region. After Germany's defeat, Chuuk became part of the Japanese Empire. It was managed under the South Seas Mandate of the League of Nations.
Chuuk is now a key part of the Federated States of Micronesia. The FSM was established in 1979. Chuuk signed a Compact of Free Association with the United States in 1986. Today, the state has a bicameral legislature. A governor serves as the chief executive. The state is currently discussing its future relationship with the FSM. There have been several attempts to hold a referendum on independence. These votes have been postponed several times. Officials are still determining the legal rules for a possible secession.
The population of Chuuk is significant compared to its neighbors. In the 2000 census, the population was 53,595. By the 2010 census, the number was 48,654. This is much higher than Pohnpei, Yap, or Kosrae. Weno is the state capital and the largest city. Most residents speak the Chuukese language. Christianity is the main religion due to Spanish, German, and American missionaries.
Tourism in Chuuk is a major area of interest. The state receives the most visitors in the FSM. Most tourism focuses on the diving industry. This industry was helped by the work of Kimiuo Aisek. The lagoon contains incredible underwater assets. It holds the world's largest underwater military cemetery. This site was created by American attacks on the Japanese fleet in 1944.
