The state is located in the Pacific Ocean. To its west lies Yap State. To the east are Pohnpei State and Kosrae State. Chuuk is the most populous state in the FSM. Most of its people live within the Chuuk Lagoon. This lagoon is a massive archipelago. It features mountainous islands surrounded by a ring of islets on a barrier reef.

The geography of the state is divided into distinct regions. The Chuuk Lagoon has two major divisions. These are Faichuuk in the west and Namoneas in the east. There are also several sparsely populated outer island groups. These include the Mortlock Islands to the southeast. The Hall Islands, or Pafeng, sit to the north. The Namonuito Atoll is located to the northwest. The Pattiw Region lies to the west. This region includes the islands of Pollap, Tamatam, Poluwat, and Houk.

The Pattiw islands are known for traditional master navigators. These experts use ocean-going outrigger canoes. There are even two remaining schools of navigation named Weriyeng and Faaluush.

Human history in Chuuk began with Austronesian settlers. These people likely came from the Lapita culture of Island Melanesia. Archaeological evidence shows settlements on Feefen and Wééné Islands. These settlements date back to the first or second century BCE. By the 14th century CE, widespread settlements appeared. This period saw the formation of the Chuukese culture. European contact began with Spanish navigator Alvaro de Saavedra in 1528. The Spanish Empire later claimed the islands as part of the Caroline Islands. However, Spanish control was often only nominal. Traditional life continued despite their presence.

Control of the islands changed many times through the 19th and 20th centuries. Germany purchased the Caroline Islands from Spain in 1899. This happened after Spain lost the Philippines in the Spanish–American War. Germany included the territory in German New Guinea. During World War I, the Japanese navy seized German possessions in the region. After Germany's defeat, Chuuk became part of the Japanese Empire. It was managed under the South Seas Mandate of the League of Nations.

Following World War II, the United States administered the area. Chuuk was one of six districts in the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI). This administration lasted until the mid-1980s.

Chuuk is now a key part of the Federated States of Micronesia. The FSM was established in 1979. Chuuk signed a Compact of Free Association with the United States in 1986. Today, the state has a bicameral legislature. A governor serves as the chief executive. The state is currently discussing its future relationship with the FSM. There have been several attempts to hold a referendum on independence. These votes have been postponed several times. Officials are still determining the legal rules for a possible secession.

The population of Chuuk is significant compared to its neighbors. In the 2000 census, the population was 53,595. By the 2010 census, the number was 48,654. This is much higher than Pohnpei, Yap, or Kosrae. Weno is the state capital and the largest city. Most residents speak the Chuukese language. Christianity is the main religion due to Spanish, German, and American missionaries.

You can see this in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral. However, some traditional beliefs about spirit possession still exist among the people.

Tourism in Chuuk is a major area of interest. The state receives the most visitors in the FSM. Most tourism focuses on the diving industry. This industry was helped by the work of Kimiuo Aisek. The lagoon contains incredible underwater assets. It holds the world's largest underwater military cemetery. This site was created by American attacks on the Japanese fleet in 1944.

There are 60 ships and 400 aircraft scattered across the area. Divers visit to see the marine diversity and these historic wrecks. However, the site faces challenges from dynamite fishing and decaying ship carcasses.
