Chuuk is part of the Federated States of Micronesia. These islands are atolls. An atoll is a ring of land in the sea.

Two large atolls make up the main group. One is Nomwin. It is in the west. The other is Murilo. It is in the east. They are about 9 km apart. They sit on a twin-lobed seamount. A seamount is a mountain under the sea.

More than 1,000 people live on Nomwin. More than 1,000 people live on Murilo. They are about 100 km north of Chuuk Lagoon. Some people also include East Fayu in the group. East Fayu is a small atoll. It is more than 30 km west of Nomwin. No one lives on East Fayu.

The three atolls have many small islands. These are called islets or motus. There are more than 50 of them. All together, they have 3.5 km2 of dry land.
