It is part of the Yap State in the Federated States of Micronesia. The main group, called the Yap Main Islands, has four separate islands. These are Yap Proper, Gagil-Tamil, Maap, and Rumung. All four islands sit inside one big coral reef. Gagil-Tamil and Yap Proper were once one piece of land. In 1901, a narrow canal called the Tagireeng Canal was built to separate them. The land is made of rolling hills and green valleys. You might also see mangrove swamps near the shore.

The weather in Yap is very warm and wet. It has a tropical rainforest climate. This means it stays hot and rainy all year long. The air feels most humid from June to October. The islands were formed by the rising of the Philippine Sea Plate. Because of this, Yap is called a high island. This is different from flat islands called atolls. The highest point on the islands is Mount Taabiywol. It is located in the Fanif area on Yap Proper.

People have lived in Yap for a very long time. Ancient migrants first came from places like the Malay Peninsula and New Guinea. These early travelers were amazing navigators. They sailed long distances in outrigger canoes. They did not use compasses to find their way. Instead, they watched the stars and the ocean waves. Over time, different groups settled the islands. Today, people speak many languages, including Yapese and English. The people of the outer islands have different cultures than those on the main islands.

Long ago, people sailed to Palau to get these stones. It was a hard and dangerous job. They carried the stones home on rafts behind canoes. Today, people use the U.S. dollar for daily things. However, they still use stone money for special ceremonies like marriages.

Many different countries have ruled Yap throughout its history. Spanish explorers first saw the islands in 1528. Spain held the islands as a colony for a long time. Later, Germany took control of Yap in 1899. During World War II, Japanese troops were also there. After the war, the United States managed the islands. In 1986, Yap became part of the independent nation of Micronesia. Even with these changes, Yap keeps its strong traditions. The people still build traditional houses like the tabinaw and the faluw.
