The Ryukyu Islands are a long chain of islands in Japan.

They stretch from Kyushu in the north toward Taiwan in the south. These islands are also known as the Nansei Islands. This name means "southwest" in Japanese. The chain is divided into different groups of islands. The northern islands are part of Kagoshima Prefecture. The southern islands belong to Okinawa Prefecture. The largest island in this whole chain is Okinawa Island. Some islands are made of volcanoes. Other smaller islands are made of coral.

The weather on these islands is very warm. It is a humid subtropical climate in the north. The southern islands have a tropical rainforest climate. This means it is much warmer than mainland Japan. The islands get a lot of rain throughout the year. This rain comes from a rainy season and typhoons. Typhoons are big storms that happen in the summer. In the winter, the weather is mild. The ocean water is very clear during this time.

History tells us about a group called the Ryukyuan people. They lived in the former Ryukyu Kingdom. This kingdom ruled the islands from 1429 to 1875.

The Ryukyuan people have their own distinct languages. Many major islands have their own unique ways of speaking. Today, most people speak the Japanese language. They often use the Okinawan Japanese dialect. The Daitō Islands were different for a long time. They were empty until the Meiji period. People from the Izu Islands moved there. These people spoke the Hachijō language.

Many specific islands make up this large chain. The northern islands include the Ōsumi and Tokara groups. The Amami Islands are also in the north. Moving south, you find the Okinawa Islands. This group includes Kume and Aguni islands. Further south are the Miyako Islands. The chain ends with the Yaeyama Islands. These include Ishigaki and the island of Yonaguni.

The islands are separated by two big gaps. One is the Tokara Strait. The other is the Kerama Gap. These gaps help divide the island groups.

The islands have changed hands many times. After the Pacific War, the United States held the islands. This happened after the 1951 Treaty of San Francisco. Later, the islands were returned to Japan. This happened under the 1971 Okinawa reversion agreement. Some islands, like the Senkaku Islands, are still disputed by China. The islands are a very important part of Japan. They connect the main islands to the warmer south. They are a place of great cultural history.
