It sits at the very bottom and far west of the country. The islands spread out across a huge area of the sea. They cover about 1,000 kilometers from east to west. They also stretch 400 kilometers from north to south. This area includes the Okinawa Islands, the Sakishima Islands, and the Daitō Islands.

Even though the land itself is not huge, the sea area is very large. It is nearly half the size of three other main Japanese islands combined.

Life in Okinawa feels very warm and tropical. The weather is subtropical, so it stays warm all year long. It also rains a lot in these islands.

There are 160 islands in this group. Most are empty, but 49 islands have people living on them. Okinawa Island is the largest and most crowded island. It is where the capital city, Naha, is located. Other big cities like Uruma and Urasoe are also there. Many people visit these islands today for tourism and services.

Okinawa has a very deep and old history. Long ago, it was known as the Ryukyu Kingdom.

This kingdom was a busy hub for trading goods by sea. They traded with many places like China and Japan. The kings of Ryukyu even sent gifts to the Ming dynasty in China. In the 12th century, people lived in a time called the Gusuku period. They built strong stone homes called Gusuku to protect their lands.

Some of these stone ruins can still be seen today.

People in these islands have a unique way of life. They are often called Ryukyuans. This group includes people from the Nansei Islands and parts of Kagoshima. They have their own special music and festivals. You might hear a musical instrument called a sanshin.

They also have a famous dance called Eisa. Many people around the world know Okinawa as the birthplace of karate. This martial art started here before it became popular everywhere else.

Recent history has also changed the islands. After a big battle in 1945, the United States ran the islands for a while. They were given back to Japan in 1972.

Today, many U.S. military bases are still located in Okinawa. These bases take up about 70% of the land used by U.S. forces. This is a topic that people in Japan talk about a lot. Some people even have a movement to ask for independence. This shows how much the islands value their own unique identity.
