It is a kidney-shaped island made from old volcanoes. Most of the people in the country live here. In 2021, there were 10,898 people living on the island. This is about 72% of the whole country's population. The island sits in the ocean and is part of a group of islands. It is a very popular place for tourists to visit. Many people stay in local resorts, hotels, and motels.

The middle of the island is very different from the coast. It has thick green forests and deep valleys. These valleys were made long ago by the old volcano. Te Manga is the highest peak on the island.

It rises 658 meters above the sea. Small streams like the Avatiu and Takuvaine flow down the hills. Because the mountains are so steep, there are no roads through the center. Most people live on the flat land near the beach instead.

People have lived on Rarotonga for a very long time. Polynesian groups arrived there around the year 1000.

Oral stories say different groups settled the island at different times. In 1823, a man named Captain John Dibbs arrived on a ship. He was carrying a missionary named Reverend John Williams. Later, many missionaries came to teach the religion of Christianity. By 1830, most people on the island had converted to this faith.

The island has many interesting places to see and do. You can walk on white sandy beaches or go snorkeling in the lagoon. The lagoon is protected by a shallow reef.

This reef has many passages where the water moves through. In the southeast, there is a special area called Takitumu. This area protects native plants and birds. You might see the kakerori, which is a bird that is vulnerable. Other birds there include the fruit dove and the starling.

Traveling around the island is quite easy for visitors. A main road called Ara Tapu circles the entire coast. There is also an ancient road called Ara Metua.

This old road was built in the 11th century using stone slabs. There are only two bus routes that go around the island. One bus goes clockwise and the other goes anti-clockwise. Many people also use taxis to get around the different districts. The capital city, Avarua, is the main hub for everything.
