The city serves as the holy center for Mouridism. This is a Sufi religious order. Mouridism was founded by Shaikh Ahmadou Bàmba Mbàcke. He was a famous religious and social leader in Senegal. He sought to protect society from colonial alienation. He wanted to return people to the "Straight Path" of Islam. Touba is central to both his spiritual and social missions.

Many people wonder about the origin of the name Touba. The name may come from the Arabic word "tawba," which means repentance. It might also refer to "ṭūbā," which means felicity or bliss. In Islamic tradition, Ṭūbā is also the name of a tree in Paradise. In Sufism, this tree represents a desire for spiritual perfection. The name evokes the sweet pleasures of eternal life.

The history of the city began as a small hamlet in the Baol region. Shaikh Ahmadou Bàmba Mbàcke founded Touba in 1887. It is said he experienced a cosmic vision of light under a large tree. This moment of transcendence helped the settlement grow. For many years, the site remained a tiny, isolated place in the wilderness. It stayed this way until Bamba died and was buried there 40 years later.

At the heart of the city is the Great Mosque. This mosque is believed to be one of the largest in Africa. It was completed in 1963. Since then, it has been continuously enlarged and embellished. The structure features five minarets and three large domes. One high central minaret is named Lamp Fall. This name honors Sheikh Ibrahima Fall, an influential disciple of Bamba.

Many important religious sites surround the Great Mosque. These include the mausolea of Bamba's sons, who were the caliphs of the order. Other sites include a library, a cemetery, and a sacred "Well of Mercy." The Caliph's official audience hall is also located in the center. The current leader is Serigne Mountakha Mbacké. He is the eighth Caliph of Mouridism. He is the third caliph who is not a direct son of Ahmadou Bamba.

Touba holds a unique legal status in Senegal. It is an administratively autonomous zone. This means it enjoys a form of quasi-extraterritoriality. The Mouride order manages the city independently of the Senegalese state. A khalīfa-general and his helpers hold sole control. They manage education, health, and the supply of drinking water. They also oversee public works, markets, and land development.

This special status also creates a free-trade zone. For instance, imports from the neighboring Gambia are exempt from state taxes. This system is described as an ancient West African form of Islamic life. It allows devotees to live apart from the pressures of temporal authorities. During the Grand Magal pilgrimage, the state recognizes this distinctive status. Official delegations from the government visit to acknowledge the Mourides.

The Grand Magal is a massive annual pilgrimage. It attracts approximately two million people from across the world. Many visitors come from Senegal, Europe, and America. Because it is a sacred city, certain behaviors are forbidden. For example, the consumption of alcohol and tobacco is not allowed. Life in Touba is deeply defined by Muslim practice and Islamic scholarship.
