It serves as a major urban center located near the Atlantic coast. The city sits along the Gambia River, close to the capital city of Banjul. Together, Serekunda and Banjul form a large urban area known as the Kombos. This region is incredibly significant because it contains about half of the entire population of The Gambia.

Because it is so large, Serekunda acts as a hub for business, culture, and politics.

The growth of Serekunda is closely tied to the geography of the capital. Banjul is situated on a small island surrounded by mangrove swamps. This island setting restricts how much the capital can expand physically. As a result, Serekunda has absorbed much of the overflow population from Banjul. Many businesses and government offices have also moved to Serekunda. They seek the more modern offices and better infrastructure found there. This shift has turned Serekunda into a primary center for commerce and development.

The history of the city began in the second half of the 19th century. A Wolof man named Sayerr Jobe founded the original settlement. Jobe came from Koki in the Kingdom of Cayor, which is in modern-day northern Senegal. He left his home following a power struggle and traveled upriver through Niumi and Banjul. When he arrived, the area was covered in thick forest, with Sukuta being the only nearby settlement. The name Serekunda is actually a corruption of "Sayerr Jobe Kunda." Jobe passed away in 1896 after delegating power to his seven sons.

Over time, several distinct villages merged to form the modern urban area. These include settlements such as Dippakunda, Latrikunda, and Serekunda itself. The town of Touray Kunda was also established by one of the first settler families. Today, the city includes various towns like London Corner, Bundung, and Tallinding. The nearby fishing village of Bakau has also expanded into the larger urban sprawl. This merging of different communities has created a diverse and densely populated environment.

Religion plays a major role in the daily life of Serekunda's residents. The city is a regional center for the Tablighi Jamaat religious movement. The Markaz, or dawah center, is located in the Bundung neighborhood. This center features a two-storey building and a mosque that can seat 2,000 people.

The Serekunda Mosque is the oldest mosque in the city and sits on Sayerr Jobe Avenue. Another notable site is the Pipeline Mosque, which features a 33-metre-tall minaret. These religious institutions serve many people from across West Africa.

Serekunda is also a center for commerce and popular culture. It is home to the largest market in the entire country.

Along the coast, the Senegambia Strip attracts many foreign tourists.

The city is also a place for intense physical activity and sport. It contains multiple football stadiums for matches. Additionally, Gambian wrestling is a very popular sport held at local venues.

These activities contribute to the lively atmosphere of the city.

The climate in Serekunda is influenced by its proximity to the Sahara Desert. The weather is very bright, with the sky remaining cloudless on 80% of days. The total ozone amount typically ranges between 225 and 329 Dobson units. The ozone levels tend to peak during the rainy season, which lasts from June to October. This environment creates a warm and sunny setting for the many people living and working in the region.
