The capital city is Monrovia, which is also the largest city in the country. Liberia is home to approximately 5.5 million people. While English is the official language, the nation is culturally diverse. More than 20 indigenous languages are spoken by its people.

The history of modern Liberia is tied to the American Colonization Society (ACS). The ACS was formed in 1816 by groups like Quakers and slaveholders. They believed that black people would find better freedom and prosperity in Africa than in the United States. Between 1822 and 1861, over 15,000 freed and free-born African Americans moved to the region. Additionally, 3,198 Afro-Caribbeans relocated to the area.

These settlers developed a unique Americo-Liberian identity. They brought American traditions, Protestant Christianity, and specific styles of clothing. This group often viewed themselves as culturally superior to the indigenous populations. This mindset led to long-term tensions regarding political power and land.

Indigenous groups have inhabited this region for a very long time. Archaeological evidence shows ancient humans lived in West Africa using Oldowan tools. Later, Middle Stone Age technologies were present in the region.

Between 4,000 and 3,500 years ago, some societies transitioned into food producers. This change likely happened as the environment became more arid. By the 12th century, indigenous peoples had established strong presence in the area. Groups like the Dei, Bassa, Kru, Gola, and Kissi were among the earliest documented peoples. The Mande-speaking people also expanded into the region from the north and east.

Liberia holds a unique status in African history. On July 26, 1847, the settlers proclaimed independence. This made Liberia the first African republic to gain independence. It is also Africa's oldest continuously independent country.

During the European Scramble for Africa, Liberia remained independent. This is similar to Ethiopia, though Ethiopia faced an Italian occupation from 1936 to 1941. The United States did not formally recognize Liberian independence until February 5, 1862.

The economy has shifted through many different stages. In the early 20th century, the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company invested heavily in rubber. This investment changed the workforce and the local climate. During World War II, Liberia supported the United States against Nazi Germany. In return, the U.S. provided investment in infrastructure.

Since the 1960s, mining has been a major economic driver. However, mining has also caused environmental issues. These include deforestation, water pollution, and air pollution. Industrial miners also face challenges with low wages and poor living conditions.

Liberia experienced significant hardship during two civil wars. The first war ran from 1989 until 1997. The second war erupted in 1998 and lasted until 2003. These conflicts were very destructive to the nation. Approximately 250,000 people died during these wars. This number represents about 8% of the total population. The economy also shrank by 90% during this period.

Today, Liberia is a member of many international organizations. It is a founding member of the United Nations and the League of Nations. It is also part of the Organisation of African Unity. The country has worked to remain relatively stable since the civil wars ended.
