The city sits on a headland near the Atlantic Ocean. It is located between Pointe-Noire Bay and the open sea. You can also find it near the border with Angola. This city is the main economic center for the whole nation. It is an autonomous department and a commune.

Many different things make the city work. It is a major hub for the oil industry in Central Africa. This work grew quickly after oil was found around 1980. The city also has a large fishing industry. However, the fishing industry sometimes has a hard job because of the oil work. The waters are sometimes reported to be overfished. People also use the city to export timber.

Long ago, this area was home to a fishing village called Ndji-Ndji. It was part of the Kingdom of Loango. In 1484, Portuguese sailors saw black rocks on the land. They gave the place the name Pointe-Noire, which means "Black Point."

France acquired the land through a treaty in 1883. That same year, the city of Pointe-Noire was officially founded. The city grew from just 3,000 people in 1927 to over 1 million people later on.

Traveling around the city is quite easy. The Congo-Ocean Railway ends right here in the city.
