It sits on the north side of the huge Congo River. The city is located just below the Pool Malebo. It is inland from the Atlantic Ocean and sits south of the equator. This place is very special because of its location. It is the only place on Earth where two national capitals sit on opposite banks of a river. Across the water, you can see Kinshasa, which is the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Because it is near the river, the city grew into a center for trading. Ships and boats carry goods like wood, rubber, and farm products up the river. A long railroad also connects the city to the port of Pointe-Noire.

This railway helps businessmen send products to the ocean. The weather in the city stays warm all year long. It has a wet season from October to May and a dry season for the rest of the year.

Long ago, the area was home to two trading centers called Mfwa and Mpila. These were part of the Tio Kingdom. An explorer named Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza founded the settlement in 1880. The city was named to honor his name.
