The Angolan Civil War was a very long and difficult conflict. It took place in the country of Angola in Africa. This war started in 1975 right after the country became independent. For many years, Portugal had ruled over the land. When the Portuguese left, the new nation faced a hard job. Different groups of people fought to see who would lead the new government.

The fighting was between groups with different goals and backgrounds. One group was called the MPLA. They were mostly based in cities like Luanda and were supported by the Mbundu people. Another group was called UNITA. They were led by Jonas Savimbi and were mostly from rural areas. UNITA was made up of the Ovimbundu people, who were the largest ethnic group in Angola.

This war was special because many other countries joined in to help. This was part of a global struggle called the Cold War. The Soviet Union and Cuba sent soldiers and supplies to help the MPLA. Yugoslavia also gave money and training to help the MPLA government. On the other side, the United States and South Africa helped UNITA. This meant the fight in Angola was tied to much bigger events around the world.

The war lasted for 27 years and had three main periods of heavy fighting. These big periods were from 1975 to 1991, then 1992 to 1994, and finally 1998 to 2002. There were some short times of peace, but they did not last long. The fighting was very hard on the country's buildings and roads.

By the time the war ended in 2002, the damage was very large.

The cost of the war was very high for the people of Angola. Between 500,000 and 800,000 people died during the conflict. More than one million people had to leave their homes to find safety. The war also hurt the economy and the way the government worked. Even today, many land mines remain in the countryside. People must still be very careful when they walk in those areas.
