Matadi is the primary sea port of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It also serves as the capital city for the Kongo Central province. The city sits right next to the border with Angola.

Geographically, Matadi is positioned on the left bank of the Congo River. It is located just below the final navigable point on the river. Beyond this point, the river becomes impassable due to a series of rapids. This specific location makes Matadi a vital gateway for the entire nation.

The physical landscape of Matadi is defined by its rugged terrain. The word Matadi means "stone" in the local Kikongo language. This name reflects the steep hills upon which the town is built. Because of this steepness, a local saying exists about living there. It claims one must know the verbs "to go up," "to go down," and "to sweat."

The climate is classified as a dry tropical savanna climate, known as Köppen Aw. This region experiences a long dry season from June to September. This weather pattern is caused by the northerly extension of the cold Benguela Current.

History in this region stretches back many centuries. The area was near the site of the state of Vungu. This state was first mentioned in the year 1535. Much further back, the Portuguese explorer Diogo Cão visited the area. He left graffiti in a series of caves known as the "rock of Diogo Cão." He carved these marks in 1485 to show the limit of his travels.

The modern city of Matadi was founded later by Sir Henry Morton Stanley in 1879.

The city grew because of its strategic position on the Congo River. It became the furthest inland port within the Congo Free State. To move goods past the impassable rapids, the Matadi–Kinshasa Railway was constructed. This railway was built between 1890 and 1898. It spans a total distance of 366 km. The railway allows goods from the deep interior to reach the sea port.

This infrastructure transformed Matadi into a major trading center. A monument to the railway builders now stands on a nearby hill.

Today, the port of Matadi is a massive hub for international trade. It acts as a major point for both imports and exports. The city's chief exports are timber and coffee. The state fishing company, Pemarza, uses the port to supply fish to Kinshasa. The port has a maximum draft of 8.2m. Because of this limit, larger ships must transfer cargo to smaller vessels at the port of Pointe-Noire in the Republic of Congo. To solve this, development began in 2022 on a deep-sea port at Port Banana.

Transportation infrastructure is essential for connecting the city to the rest of the country. The Matadi Bridge is a major feature located just south of the city. It is a suspension bridge with a total length of 722 m. The main span of the bridge measures 520 m. Built in 1983, it is the only bridge over the main stem of the Congo River.

While it was designed for both rail and road, no rail lines currently operate over it. The bridge carries the main road that links Kinshasa to the coast. This road continues toward Boma, Muanda, and Banana.

Matadi is organized into three administrative sections called communes. These are the communes of Matadi, Mvuzi, and Nzanza. The city also hosts the Tshimpi Airport for air travel. Local industry is supported by power from the M'pozo River. A power station on this river supplies electricity to the city.

The city's urban design was influenced by Portuguese and French West-African commercial interests. This influence can be seen in the architecture, which resembles neighboring colonies in Angola and Congo-Brazzaville.
