It is a massive, rapidly expanding megacity. Experts estimate its population will reach 18.5 million by 2026. This growth makes it one of the fastest-growing urban areas on Earth. Kinshasa is the seventh-most populous city proper in the world. It is also the fourth-most populous capital city globally. Within Africa, it ranks as the third-most populous city and third-largest metropolitan area.

It serves as the primary economic, political, and cultural heart of the DRC.

The city sits on flat, low-lying terrain at an average altitude of 300 meters.

It stretches in a wide crescent along the southern shores of Pool Malebo. The Congo River forms the city's northern and western boundaries. This river creates a natural border with the Republic of the Congo. Directly across the water sits Brazzaville, the capital of the neighboring country. These two cities form the world's closest pair of capital cities. They are separated by only a four-kilometer-wide stretch of river that has no bridge.

Kinshasa borders several provinces, including Kwilu, Kwango, and Mai-Ndombe to the east. To the south lies the Kongo Central Province.

Kinshasa is administratively divided into 24 communes, or municipal districts. These are further subdivided into 365 smaller neighborhoods. While the city is huge, covering 9,965 square kilometers, much of the province remains rural. Over 90 percent of the land is not urbanized. Most urban growth happens on the western side of the region. The city is the largest nominally Francophone urban area in the world. French is the official language for government, education, and media. However, Lingala is the lingua franca used for daily communication on the streets.

The people who live here are known as Kinois.

The history of the site begins long before modern borders existed. The Teke and Humbu people inhabited the area for many centuries. The site was originally known as Nshasa. There are different theories about why it had this name. Anthropologist Paul Raymaekers suggests it combines Kikongo and Kihumbu words. He believes "Ki" means a hill and "Nsasa" means a bag of salt. This would reflect the area's history as a salt trading site. Another researcher, Hendrik van Moorsel, suggests the name comes from the Teke word for exchange. He believes it evolved from "Intsaya," meaning a place of exchange.

Henry Morton Stanley established a trading post here in 1881. He named it Léopoldville to honor King Leopold II of Belgium.

Léopoldville grew quickly due to its location on the Congo River. It served as the first navigable port above the Livingstone Falls. These falls are a series of rapids that prevent ships from traveling further. Initially, goods had to be carried by porters between the coast and the city. This changed in 1898 with the completion of the Matadi–Kinshasa railway. This railway provided a way to move goods around the rapids. In 1914, a pipeline was added to move crude oil to river steamers. The city became the capital of the Belgian Congo in 1923.

This transition led to the creation of Gombe as a colonial administrative center.

Political changes in the 20th century reshaped the city's identity. After gaining independence in 1960, the nation faced significant political unrest. Joseph-Désiré Mobutu seized power in 1965. He began a policy called "Authenticity" to restore local culture. This included changing the names of people and places. In 1966, Léopoldville was officially renamed Kinshasa to honor the original Nshasa village. The city continued to grow as people moved there for work or to escape conflict. Today, the city is a hub for manufacturing, banking, and telecommunications.
