It serves as a vital economic and political hub for the nation. The city proper is divided into five political divisions: Kampala Central, Kawempe, Makindye, Nakawa, and Rubaga. The wider metropolitan area is even larger. It includes the neighboring Wakiso, Mukono, Mpigi, Buikwe, and Luweero districts.

This massive urban area is growing very quickly. In 2019, the population was estimated at 6,709,900 people. Some estimates place the metropolitan population at around four million. Kampala is one of the fastest-growing cities in Africa. Its annual population growth rate is 4.03 percent.

The city's economy is central to the stability of Uganda. In 2015, the metropolitan area generated a nominal GDP of $13.8 billion. This figure used constant 2011 US dollars. That amount represented more than half of Uganda's total GDP for that year. This shows how much the country relies on Kampala's business and trade. The city is also highly regarded in the region. The firm Mercer has ranked Kampala as the best city to live in within East Africa. It has placed Kampala ahead of other major cities like Nairobi and Kigali.

The name "Kampala" has a specific linguistic origin. It originally referred only to Old Kampala hill. This hill was once a hunting reserve for the Kabaka, or King, of Buganda. Many impala, a type of antelope, lived on the hill. When British colonial officials were given the hill, they called it "The Hill of the Impala." The local people translated this phrase into Akasozi k’empala. Over time, this was shortened to k'empala and eventually became Kampala.

This name eventually grew to represent the entire growing settlement.

History shows that the area was once the heart of the Buganda Kingdom. The landscape consists of many hills and swamps. In the past, different kings, known as Bassekabaka, moved their capitals, called Kibuga, to different hills.

Explorers documented these shifts in the 19th century. Sir Richard Burton provided the first written description in 1860. In 1862, John Speke found the capital at Banda Hill. By 1875, Henry Morton Stanley reported the capital was at Lubaga Hill. These early visitors helped bring global attention to the region.

Missionaries arrived in the late 1870s and changed the city's social structure. Protestant missionaries arrived in 1877 and were given Namirembe Hill. Catholic White Fathers arrived in 1879 and eventually settled on Lubaga Hill.

These groups later faced religious wars between 1888 and 1892. This conflict led to British government involvement as a protectorate. In 1890, Frederick Lugard arrived and signed a treaty of protection. He built a fort on Old Kampala hill. This era also saw the start of Western-style education and medicine. Mengo Senior School opened in 1895, and Mengo Hospital opened in 1897.

Land ownership in Kampala was formalized by the Buganda Agreement of 1900. This agreement was signed by regents for the infant Kabaka Daudi Cwa II and Sir Harry Johnston. The treaty created different types of land tenures. These included freehold, Crown land, and mailo land. This system determined how the city would grow. For example, the Catholic White Fathers received Lubaga Hill. The Protestant Church Missionary Society received Namirembe Hill. The British government obtained Crown lands like Nakasero Hill.

These legal changes shaped the modern layout of the city.

Urban development continued through the 20th century with new infrastructure. The Uganda Railway reached Kampala in 1931. This connected the city to the port of Mombasa. In 1938, the first electric street lights were switched on.

Planning became more complex as the city expanded. Architect Ernst May proposed a plan in 1947 to extend the city eastwards. Later, Henry Kendall adopted a plan in 1951. Uganda gained independence on October 9, 1962. At that time, the capital moved from Entebbe to Kampala. The city was granted official city status that same year.

Today, Kampala's geography is defined by its unique topography. The city covers 724 square kilometers. This includes both land and water. The landscape is very hilly with valleys containing slow rivers and swamps.
