Gitega

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Gitega is a very important city in Burundi. It sits right in the center of the country. The city is located on a wide, flat area called a plateau. Many green hills stand all around this plateau. You can find the Ruvubu National Park to the east. This is the largest park in all of Burundi.

Two rivers, the Ruvyironza and the Rurubu, meet near the city. Gitega is the fourth largest city in the nation. It is also the capital of Gitega Province.

This city is changing how it works for the country. For a long time, Bujumbura was the main capital. Now, Gitega is the political capital of Burundi. This means the leaders and the government live here. Bujumbura will stay as the center for trade and money. The change was announced by President Pierre Nkurunziza in 2018. The Parliament made the move official on 16 January 2019.

Different parts of the government began moving to the city soon after.

Gitega has a very long and royal history. It was once the home of the kings of Burundi. These kings were called mwami. The city was the royal capital until 1966. In 1912, a plan was made for the modern town. This happened when Burundi was part of German East Africa.

The city also holds the National Museum of Gitega. You can find special royal drum sanctuaries in this area. These drums are part of the old royal court. The last king, Ntare V, lived and died here.

Many different things happen in this busy place. In 2014, the Polytechnic University of Gitega was started. This is a place where people go to learn. People also go to many different places of worship. You can find Catholic, Anglican, Baptist, and Assemblies of God churches. There are also Muslim mosques in the city.

Some people may remember a sad event from 2021. A fire happened in a crowded prison in the city. Sadly, at least 38 people lost their lives that day.

Traveling to Gitega is easy because of many roads. Four national roads connect the city to other regions. One road, RN2, goes northwest to the city of Bujumbura. Another road, RN15, leads north toward the border of Rwanda. This path passes by the old royal court of Gishora.

Road RN12 goes northeast to reach other provinces. Finally, road RN3 heads southwest toward Lake Tanganyika. These paths help connect the center of the country to the edges. The city sits about the same distance from the Tanzanian border and the Rwandan border.
