geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Gitega is a city in the middle of Burundi. It sits on a wide plateau. Many hills surround the city. Two rivers meet just a few kilometers away. The biggest park in the country is to the east. We call this Ruvubu National Park.

Gitega has a long history. It was once the home of kings. It was the royal capital for the Kingdom of Burundi. In 1912, people made a plan for the modern town. Now, Gitega is the political capital of the country. This change was made official in 2019. The city of Bujumbura is still the center for trade.

Many roads connect Gitega to other places. These roads help people travel to the north and south. You can also find many churches and mosques here. There is a place called the National Museum of Gitega. It holds important things from the past. There is also a school called the Polytechnic University of Gitega. It opened in 2014. Gitega is the fourth largest city in Burundi.
