In Portuguese, these volcanic plateaus are called achada. You can see names like Achada de Santo António or Achada Grande. Most of the city is built on top of these flat hills. Some parts of the city also grow along the valleys between them. The islet of Santa Maria sits right in front of the beach.

Praia has a long and busy history. The island of Santiago was found by António da Noli in 1460. A village called Praia de Santa Maria was mentioned around 1615. It grew quickly because it was near a natural harbor. The city was safer than the older city, Ribeira Grande. This was because Praia sits on a high plateau. It was harder for pirates to attack the city there. Praia became the capital of Cape Verde in 1770.
