It is one of the 19 districts that make up the city of Dakar. The island is quite small in both length and width. It sits near the main harbor of the city. Because it is small, it is the least populated district in Dakar. In the 2013 census, only 1,680 people lived on the island. This means the island is not very crowded compared to the rest of the city.

History shows that many different groups of people wanted to control the island.

Portuguese traders first arrived there in 1444. They even built a small chapel made of stone and straw. Later, the Dutch took control of the island. They named it Goeree after a Dutch island. The Dutch built forts like Fort Nassau in 1628 and Fort Orange in 1639.

The island changed hands many times between the French and the British during different wars. Eventually, the French ruled the island until 1960.

Gorée is a very important place for learning about the Atlantic slave trade.

For a long time, the island served as a place to trade people. One of the most famous buildings is the House of Slaves.

This house was built by an Afro-French family between 1780 and 1784. Today, it acts as a memorial to help people remember this difficult time. In 1978, the island was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This was one of the first 12 places in the world to receive this honor.

Life on the island has changed a lot over the years.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, a group called the Métis lived there. These were people of mixed African and European descent. Some Métis women were very successful in business and owned ships. Later, the island became a place to trade things like peanuts and ivory. For a time, it was also home to a teachers' college. Many students who studied there helped lead the struggle for independence.

Today, Gorée is a popular place for travelers to visit.

There are no cars allowed on the island. People must take a 30-minute ferry ride from the mainland to get there. Many of the old buildings are now used as hotels or restaurants. Visitors can walk through the streets to see the historic sites. In 1985, people started the Dakar-Gorée Swim. This event honors the resilience of those who sought freedom.
