Many different groups of people have lived on the island throughout history. Long ago, the Greeks and the Phoenicians arrived there. The Phoenicians were very important for the island's work. They taught people how to plant olive trees and press them for oil. They also made a famous purple dye that was sold for very high prices. Later, the Romans ruled the island and brought much wealth to the area.

Over many centuries, many new leaders and groups arrived on Djerba. In the fifth century, a Germanic tribe called the Vandals conquered the island. Later, Arab groups arrived during the early Muslim conquests in the year 665. The island saw many changes as different states, like the Fatimids and the Almohads, took control. In the middle ages, the island even faced invasions from the Normans. This period of time was often full of both prosperity and hard times.

There are many interesting facts about the people and the name of the island. The name Djerba may come from the Tebu language. In that language, the name might mean "the western big ones." This could refer to how the island juts out into the sea. The island also has a very old Jewish community. Some stories say they have lived there for more than 2,500 years. Many of them are descendants of ancient priests and still live in Houmt Souk.

Today, Djerba is a place where history and modern life meet. The island has gone through many big changes in the last two hundred years. It faced many epidemics and was under French rule starting in 1881. After gaining independence in 1956, it became a famous spot for travelers. Some people on the island even hope it will become its own governorate one day. It remains a unique part of the Tunisian coast.
