Gough Island is a rugged volcanic island in the South Atlantic Ocean.

It sits far from other lands, making it one of the most remote places with a human presence. The island is part of a territory called Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. It is located southeast of the Tristan da Cunha archipelago. It is also northeast of South Georgia Island and west of Cape Town, South Africa. This lonely island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its special nature.

The island is shaped like a rough rectangle. It is about 8 miles long and 3 miles wide. Most of the center is a flat plateau. However, the western side has high hills and steep cliffs. These cliffs rise over 350 metres above the sea. The highest point is a peak called Edinburgh Peak.

Deep valleys called glens cut into the mountains from the north and east. Many small rocks and tiny islands sit in the water around it. These include places like Saddle Island and Penguin Island.

People have known about this island for a very long time. A Portuguese explorer named Gonçalo Álvares likely found it in July 1505. For many years, maps called it Ilha de Gonçalo Álvares. Later, there was some confusion with the name Diego Alvarez. In 1732, a British captain named Charles Gough saw the island. He thought it was a new discovery. Because of him, the island eventually took his name.

In the 1800s, sealing ships visited the island to hunt. Between 1804 and 1910, about 34 sealing ships visited these shores.

The weather on Gough Island is often cold and wet. It has an oceanic climate, which means it stays fairly steady. The temperature usually stays between 5 and 15 degrees Celsius. Summers are never hot, and cold fronts can arrive easily. It rains a lot throughout the whole year. Because of the heavy clouds, there is not much sunshine. Snow often falls on the high peaks and the plateau.

Even in summer, snow can fall on the 900-metre peaks.

Gough Island is a very important home for many living things. It is one of the best places in the Atlantic for nesting seabirds. For example, it holds almost the entire world population of Tristan albatrosses. You can also find the rare Gough bunting and the Gough moorhen there.

Most people do not live here. Only a small team of about six people stays at a weather station. They have lived there since 1956 to study the weather.
